Men's Soccer Falls to UMBC

Baltimore, Md. - An injury riddled Maine (3-5-3, 0-3-2 America East) lost to UMBC (6-4-2, 2-3-0 America East) by a score of 4-1 this afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Stadium. The Retrievers struck early when junior Powell Cucchiella scored his fourth goal of the season 13:41 into the game. Less than three minutes later, senior Derek McElligott found Matt Watson who scored to put UMBC up 2-0. In the second half, the Retrievers struck early once again, scoring at the 54:57 mark. George Bakoulas scored the goal. At 58:58, the Retrievers would add a goal when Kevin Mezzadra threw the ball in to Cucchiella who headed in his second goal of the day. The Black Bears' lone goal came less than a minute later, at 59:39, when senior Justin Stockford (Foster, Rhode Island/Dean College) scored on a pass from junior Adam Chenault (Maineville, Ohio/King's HS) after a great build up. For the game, UMBC outshot the Black Bears, 13-10, but Maine had an advantage on corner kicks, 7-2. Although the scoreline was 4-1, Maine created many chances and dominated possession for the majority of the game. Both Marchica and Chad Mongeon (Essex, Vermont/Essex HS) made two saves for their respective teams. The Black Bear men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Hartford for an America East contest at 7 p.m.
