Black Bears Shutout by Stony Brook, 3-0

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine men's soccer team was shutout by Stony Brook, 3-0, on Wednesday evening. The Black Bears drop to 0-16-0, 0-7-0 in conference action, while the defending regular season and tournament champions improve to 6-11-0 on the season, 3-4-0 in America East play. Maine had limited scoring opportunities, junior Jimmy Velas (Falmouth, Maine) was credited with the lone shot on goal for the Black Bears. Velas had three shots total in the game, while freshmen Kenny Caceros (Ottawa, Ontario) and Sean Meehan (Portland, Maine) each tallied a shot. The Seawolves got on the board early in the game with a header from Oscae Leis. The goal scored in the 13th minute was assisted by Adam Ciklic. At the end of first half Stony Brook notched its second goal of the game with a goal by Michael Palacio at 42:53. Palacio's goal was assisted by Collin Geoghegan. In the second half the Seawolves extended its lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal by Pete Halkidis in the 59th minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Piotrowski (Colchester, VT) made seven saves, a season high. Stony Brook goalkeeper's Rich Skoblichi and Brian Tepfer both saw action in net. Skoblichi earned one save in 70:53 minutes of action, while Tepfer didn't register any in 19:07 minutes. The Black Bears return home Saturday, October 21 to finish out the season against America East foe Boston University. Gametime on Alumni Field is 11 am.
