Men's Soccer Downs Stony Brook for First Conference Win of the Season

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - University of Maine goalkeeper Nemanja Kostic made his fifth and final save of the game as time expired to preserve the Black Bears 2-1 win over Stony Brook on Sunday at LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, N.Y. Maine (4-7-2, 1-3-1 America East) picked up its first conference win of the season, while Stony Brook fell to 2-11-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the league.

The Seawolves regained possession in the final minute of the game, but Jherrett Maroney's point-blank shot in the waning seconds was denied by Kostic.

The Black Bears received a pair of goals from Alex Rickett. His first tally came at the 32:48 mark when he headed in a pass from Justin Facer as a mad scramble ensued in front of the net.

Stony Brook knotted the game at 1-1 in the 57th minute with a goal from James Palumbo. However, Maine answered in the 86th minute as Rickett scored on an unassisted breakaway to put Maine back on top for good.

Stony Brook had 16 shots, while Maine recorded 12. Both Kostic and Stony Brook goalkeeper Dawid Ditrich each had five saves in the contest. Marc Goulet and Rickett each had four shots for Maine, while Palumbo recorded four shots for the Seawolves.
