Maine Doubles Hartford in Conference Action
Oct. 21, 2004 WEST HARTFORD, CT (Oct. 20) - The University of Maine men's soccer team defeated the Hartford Hawks 2-1 in America East men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Al-Marzook Field. Maine (4-5-3, 1-3-2 America East) picked up its first conference win of the season while Hartford (2-8-3, 0-4-2) dropped its fourth straight game. After a scoreless first half, Maine got on the board just 20 seconds into the second half when junior Justin Stockford (Foster, Rhode Island/Dean College) took a pass from junior Kevin Forgett (Wilmington, Mass/Beaver County Day) and drilled a shot into the left corner at 45:20 to put the Black Bears on top 1-0. However, the lead would be short-lived as freshman back Nir Bublil came through with the equalizer just 1:29 later on a free kick served by senior Alon Lubezky. Maine fought back and took the lead for good when junior Gabriel Germano (Sainte Foy, Quebec/FX Garneau) scored the game-winner in the 60th minute on a long through ball from sophomore back Jason Jacobe (Windham, Maine/Windham HS). Jacobe recorded his first career point on the gamewinner. The Hawks outshot the Black Bears by a 21-8 margin but Maine goalkeeper Chad Mongeon (Essex Junction, Vermont/Essex HS) made nine huge saves to give Maine the win. Hartford's goalkeeper Ryan Carr turned away three shots for the Hawks. Maine returns to America East action on Sunday, October 24 when the Black Bears host Binghamton for a 12 p.m. contest.
