Men's Soccer Fall to Albany

ORONO, Maine-- The University of Maine men's soccer team fell to Albany 3-0 on a cold Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears fall to 4-9-2 on the season and 1-5-1 in America East play, while Albany improves to 12-3-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in conference play. Maine's Daniel Tannous (Thornhill, Ontario) was named the Man of the Match, along with Albany's Steward Ceus. Maine had three quick shots to start the game, but Albany was able to capitalize and get the first goal. Claudio Dantas crossed the ball to Bjorn Bekkers who had his shot find the upper right corner of the goal at 15:29. It was the fourth goal of the season for Bekkers. The Great Danes took a 2-0 lead at 28:15 with a goal scored in transition. Mike Peters found Dantas who beat Maine keeper Nemanja Kostic (New Belgrade, Serbia) with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal. It was the ninth goal of the season for Dantas. Albany took the 2-0 lead into halftime. The Great Danes held a slim 10-9 edge in shots in the first half. Albany capped the scoring with a goal at 65:00. Erik DiLorenzo had a direct kick and connected with L.J. Papaleo in the box. Papaleo beat Kostic to give the Great Danes the 3-0 lead. Maine had several great chances in the game, but each time Albany keeper Steward Ceus would come up with the save. Dimitri Anastasiou (Colchester, Conn.) and Alex Rickett (Northville, Mich.) each had four shots in the game. Kostic finished the game with four saves for the Black Bears. Ceus made nine saves for Albany. Maine finished the game with a 19-12 advantage in shots. The Black Bears return to action on Sunday. Nov. 2 when they host Binghamton at 1 p.m. in the final America East game of the season. Before the game, Maine will honor its seniors.
