University of Maine Men's Soccer Announces Recruiting Class

April 22, 2005

Orono, Maine - University of Maine head men's soccer coach Travers Evans has announced commitments from 7 high school standouts and the addition of one Division I transfer and one junior college transfer to the Black Bear program. Players from the prep ranks that are set to attend Maine and play soccer in the fall of 2005 include: Dimitri Anastasiou (Colchester, CT/Bacon Academy), Tom Goldie (Flaunden, England/St. Clement Dane School), Martin John (Ottawa, Canada/Ottawa Fury), Ryan Kelley (Coventry, RI/LaSalle Academy), Kyle Pacheco (Smithfield, RI/LaSalle Academy), Andrew Price (Leeds, England/Temple Moor High School), and Jensen Rich (Ellsworth, Maine/Ellsworth High School).

Maine has also welcomed two transfers to the program for the fall 2005 season:

Jameson Gonzalez (Cranston, RI/University of Hartford) and Jimmy Hernandez (Providence, RI/Dean College) bring impressive backgrounds to the Black Bear program.

"I believe we have assembled a terrific class for the `05 season," said Evans. "I would like to thank my assistant MJ Ball for all of his diligent work in helping to put this class together. I would also like to thank the campus community as a whole, and our Athletic Director Patrick Nero for their assistance in helping to attract these nine young men to the University of Maine. This group of young men will make our team considerably better, and help us to attain our goal of competing for the America East championship in 2005."

Below is a brief bio on each player:

Dimitri Anastasiou
Freshman
6'0 Forward
Colchester, CT / Bacon Academy

Played for coach Charles Hinckley at Bacon Academy. Was a four-year varsity starter tallying 52 goals and 20 assists for his career. He scored 22 goals as a junior to lead the region and was selected to the All-State team. He followed that with 24 goals as a senior again leading the region and was selected to the All-State and NSCAA All New England teams. He plays his club soccer for former Black Bear David Kelly on the World Class Premier U18 team.

Coach Evans on Anastasiou: Dimitri is a very technical attacking player. He is very comfortable with his back to goal. He has the ability to control the tempo for he is not troubled under pressure, and has a good understanding of when to quicken the pace and when to slow it down. He has the ability to compete for a position up front right away.

Tom Goldie
Freshman
5'9 Forward/Midfield
Flaunden, England / St. Clement Dane School

Played for coach Graham Brown at St. Clement Dane. Represented both District and County schoolboy teams the past four years. Four-year starter for St. Clement Dane School and led team to two District titles as leading scorer. Currently plays for Beaconsfield F.C. U18 team.

Coach Evans on Goldie: Goldie is technically sound, comfortable under pressure and has an attacking mentality. He has great vision combined with very quick feet and great speed that helps him create attacking chances. Goldie has a knack for scoring goals and will compete for time up front.

Martin John
Freshman
6'1 Back / Midfield
Ottawa, ONT / Ottawa Fury

Plays for the Ottawa Fury club. His U16 Fury team was the Northeast region champion in 2004, conceding only 13 goals in 20 games. He was selected to the Northeast Region Super Y ODP team, and selected to go to the Super Y National ODP camp in Florida in 2005. His Northeast regional team finished with a record of 6-1-1 at the national camp. He has also been a member of the Eastern Ontario provincial team, and part of the Ontario provincial identification camp.

Coach Evans on John: Martin is a very technical and athletic player. He is naturally left sided, solid defensively, and very comfortable coming forward. He also strikes a very good ball on all types of restarts. He is an extremely talented young man and should compete to play right away in the back or midfield.

Ryan Kelley
Freshman
5'8 Back/ Midfield
Coventry, RI / LaSalle Academy

Kelley was a four-year varsity player for Coach Mario Perreria at LaSalle. His team won four consecutive state championships in 2001-2004. He played for the Rhode Island ODP team that advanced the regional finals in Delaware in the summer of 2004. His club team Midstate United, coached by Providence College Assistant Dave Demello, has been three-time State Cup Champions, and advanced to the Region 1 championships. He was an All-State selection, and MVP of the state tournament in 2004.

Coach Evans on Kelley: Ryan is a very good technical player with solid vision, and a good understanding of the game. He is highly versatile, being able to play proficiently in the back, midfield, or up front. I believe one of his best attributes in his competitive nature. He comes from winning programs and hates to lose. He will be in the mix for playing time at a number of spots.

Kyle Pacheco
Freshman
6'1 Midfield/Forward
Smithfield, RI / LaSalle Academy

Pacheco also played for Rhode Island powerhouse LaSalle and Coach Mario Perreria. He was a four-year varsity player and state champion at LaSalle. He played for the Rhode Island ODP team, and two highly successful club teams. He played for Harvard Coach John Kerr on the FC Boston Bolts, and currently plays for the Bruno United U18 team coached by Brown Assistant Scott Wiercinski. His Bruno team is the Rhode Island state champion, and will advance to the Region 1 championships in Virginia Beach, VA. He was an All-State selection in 2004.

Coach Evans on Pacheco: Kyle is a gifted player technically. He is very comfortable with the ball at his feet and can run at defenders. He has a good understanding of the game having had the opportunity to play for some very good coaches. He also comes from winning programs, and will be battling for time in the midfield or up front.

Andrew Price
Freshman
6'1 Forward/Midfield
Leeds, England / Temple Moor High School

Played for coach Colin Morris at Harrogate FC. Represented both District and County schoolboy teams the past six years. Captained Colton Juniors to two league titles and cup doubles, the Millennium Cup and two Charles Rice Cups. At Temple Moor High School, captained team to 15-0-2 record.

Coach Evans on Price: Price is a multi-dimensional player who can play up front or in the attacking midfield role. He is a strong, physical and talented player who is very comfortable with the ball, is strong in the air and sees the field very well. He is an excellent communicator who is always involved in the game. He has the ability, athleticism, talent and knowledge to compete for a spot up front and as a midfielder right away.

Jensen Rich
Freshman
5'11 Forward/Midfield
Ellsworth, ME / Ellsworth

Jensen Rich was a four-year starter for coach Brian Higgins at Ellsworth High School. He helped lead his team to the Eastern Maine Class B title, and state championship game in 2004. He scored 48 career goals and added 27 assists. He was a three-time Eastern Maine All Star, and two-time All State selection. In 2004, he was selected as the class B Player of the Year, and an NSCAA All New England selection. He plays his club soccer for the Blackbear United Football Club. His team advanced to the Region 1 championships in 2002.

Coach Evans on Rich: Jensen is a solid attacking player. He has good technique, and can strike the ball well with either foot. He sees the field well and has a solid understanding of the game. I believe he has tremendous potential at this level.

Jameson Gonzalez
Sophomore
5'8 Midfield
Cranston, RI / University of Hartford

Transfer from the University of Hartford. Appeared in 12 of the 17 games as a true freshman in 2004. Prior to Hartford he led Cranston high school to the state championship game. He was a two-time All Division and two-time All Tournament team nominee. He led the team in both goals and assists. He played three years for the Rhode Island ODP team. Played club soccer for Bayside United, Bruno United, and RI Northern Lightning.

Coach Evans on Gonzalez: Jameson is technically very solid, is a good communicator, and reads the game well. He is a very competitive player with a solid year of Division1 experience in our conference. He will battle for playing time as a central midfielder in our system.

Jimmy Hernandez
Junior
5'10 Forward
Providence, RI / Dean College

Hernandez played for two years for former Black Bear Pat Laughlin at Dean College. He will leave Dean as the most decorated player in program history. He was a two-time All New England, All Region, and NJCAA All American at Dean. The first two-time All American is program history. He also set record for goals scored in a season (22) and a career (43), in addition his 43 goals and 15 assists make him the first player in program history to record over 100 points. Prior to Dean he was an All State Performer at Mount Pleasant High School also setting a school record for goals in a career with 120. He also played for the Rhode Island ODP team and was a member of the Region 1 pool in 2002 and 2003.

Coach Evans on Hernandez: Jimmy is an explosive attacking player. He has tremendous pace, athleticism, and technical ability. Combine that with his innate finishing ability, and he has the potential to be extremely successful at this level. He has been a proven goal scorer at all levels, and I expect the same here.
