Dan Balaguero Named Assistant Men's Soccer Coach
May 23, 2006 ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine has announced that Dan Balaguero has joined the staff as an assistant men's soccer coach. As a head coach at the NAIA and junior college level, he has an overall record of 79-27-6. He will work with head coach Travers Evans for the 2006 season. "We are delighted to have someone with both Dan's playing and coaching experience join our staff," said Evans. "He has been very successful at all levels and I look forward to working with him at Maine." Balaguero has spent the past four seasons as the head men's soccer coach at Virginia Intermont College. He had an overall record of 52-13-2 and were NAIA Region XII Champions in 2003 and 2005. In 2003, the team reached the Final Eight before falling 2-1 to eventual National Champion Rio Grande. He was named NAIA Region XII Coach of the Year in 2005. He began his coaching career as head coach at Champlain College, posting a 27-14-4 record from 2000 to 2003. The team advanced to three consecutive NJCAA Regional Playoffs. As a player, he was a two-time NJCAA All-American and the National Junior College Player of the Year at Champlain College. Balaguero then played at West Virginia University, where he was named to the All Big East First Team and also a Regional All-American. He has a BA in Sports Management from West Virginia and a Masters in Education from American Intercontinental University. The men's soccer team will open the season on August 25 at Massachusetts.
