Maine Selected Ninth in America East Preseason Men's Soccer Poll

ORONO, Maine--The University of Maine men's soccer team has been selected ninth in the 2008 America East Preseason Coaches' Poll, released on Wednesday, Aug. 20. The voting was done by the league's nine head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own teams. Vermont, the 2007 America East Tournament Champions, was chosen to win the league. The Catamounts received 60 points overall and five first-place votes. Binghamton was chosen second as the Bearcats received 53 points with three first-place votes. Boston University (51 points), was followed by New Hampshire (38 points, one first place vote), UMBC (35 points), Hartford (32 points), Stony Brook (29 points), Albany (17 points) and Maine (9 points). The Black Bears return their top three scorers from a year ago, including senior Dimitri Anastasiou (Colchester, Conn.). Anastasiou finished the season with four goals for eight points. He ranked tied for sixth in America East in goals scored. Sophomore Thomas McCole (Toronto, Ontario) scored two goals and added an assist in his first season with the Black Bears. Returning to anchor the defense are senior backs Kyle LeDuc (Topsham, Maine) and Corey Sinclair (Richland, Wash.). Maine opens the 2008 season at the UNH Nike Classic on Friday, Aug. 29 when it plays Rhode Island in Durham, N.H. at 2 p.m. The Black Bears play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they host Northeastern at 1 p.m. -U-M-
