Dimitri Anastasiou Named Men's Soccer Captain

Aug. 25, 2008

ORONO, Maine--University of Maine men's soccer senior forward Dimitri Anastasiou (Colchester, Conn.) has been named captain of the 2008 squad. He led Maine in scoring during the 2007 season.

"I am pleased for Dimitri and his selection as captain of the 2008 Men's Soccer team," said head coach Pat Laughlin. "Dimitri has made great strides on and off the field in the past two years and is deserving of this selection. He is determined to lead this team and push us forward."

Anastasiou has seen action in 49 career games the past three years, making 41 starts. He was one of just two players to start all 17 games a year ago. Anastasiou has six goals for 12 career points. He led Maine in scoring a year ago with four goals for eight points. He also led Maine in game-winning goals last season as he tallied the game-winner against Long Island University and Hartford.

Anastasiou has been named a Maine Scholar-Athlete Award winner and also named to the America East Academic Honor Roll.

Anastasiou and the Black Bears kick off the 2008 season when they play in the UNH Nike Classic. Maine faces Rhode Island on Friday at 2 p.m. in Durham, N.H. and then takes on Adelphi on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in a game that will be played in Durham as well. The Black Bears play their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they host Northeastern at 1 p.m.
