Oct. 22, 2007
ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine men's soccer coach Pat Laughlin was recently named the head coach of the Region 1 under 15 boys team. Region 1 covers states from Maine to Virginia on the East Coast. Laughlin has previously served as an assistant with Region 1 the past five years. "We are very pleased to reward Pat for his great work on behalf of the Region 1 Boys Olympic Development Program by naming him Head Coach of the U-15 age group," said Region 1 assistant coach Keith Tabatznik. "Pat has obviously been doing great work for the Region, and we know that he will do a professional job in helping to develop the best soccer players in the East." Players are selected to the Region 1 team from their State teams through a tournament and identification camps over the summer. The Region 1 team falls under the umbrella of US Youth Soccer's Olympic Development Program. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead the U-15 Region 1 boys team," said Laughlin. "I want to thank Jay Hoffman and Keith Tabatznik for presenting me this opportunity. I have been involved coaching with Region 1 for the last five years and have really enjoyed working with the U-15 age group. I also would like to thank Manny Shellscheidt, Bob Montgomery, Rob McCourt, and George Nazario for originally bringing me onto the Region 1 staff." The Region 1 team will play in an InterRegional event over Thanksgiving at Disney in Florida and travel to Spain in February. Laughlin is currently in his first season as head coach of the Black Bears. He recently won his 100th career game in Maine's 2-1 win over America East rival Hartford. The Black Bears play a pair of home games this week against Vermont and Stony Brook as they remain in contention for an America East playoff spot.
