Men's Soccer Teams Up For Futbol For Change
Oct. 25, 2007
Orono, Maine-- The University of Maine men's soccer team has recently teamed up to support Futbol for Change, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the children of Africa. Futbol for Change was founded in June 2007 by Michael Raskys and Robert Humphrey. Raskys hails from the same hometown as Maine's Dimitri Anastasiou (Colchester, Conn.), which is how Maine's involvement in the program began. University of Maine men's soccer players recently purchased Futbol For Change t-shirts with all the proceeds benefitting the organization. "My buddy, Mike, asked if I could get my team to buy the t-shirts to support the organization, so I brought it up to them," said Anastasiou. "They thought that it was a great idea, in the end nobody loses because it's a good cause and we're supporting soccer." The goals of the organization is to locate a community to provide assistance to in Ghana. Offer a soccer academy for the children of that community and uplift the standard of living for the community involved. Futbol For Change has been working with Dr. Owusu-Ansah, Professor of African Studies at James Madison University where both Raskys and Humphrey went to school and played collegiate soccer. The organization is planning a fact finding mission to Ghana in the fall of 2007. For those wanting more information on the organization, log onto their website at www.futbolforchange.org.
