Cooper Friend Garners Third America East Award
Nov. 8, 2005 Cooper Friend (Ellsworth, Maine/Berkshire School) was named to the 2005 America East All-Conference Second team. Friend, a senior midfielder has garnered awards each year he has competed at the University of Maine. His freshman season he was named to the America East All-Rookie team, followed by a First Team selection his sophomore season. Last season, Friend played three games before suffering a season ending injury. Friend has played a crucial role for the Black Bears over the past four years (3 seasons) seeing action in 49 games. He finishes his career leading the Black Bears in assists this season. He scored his lone collegiate goal in 2002 versus Harvard and finishes with seven career assists. In 2005: Named to the America East All-Conference Second Team...Started 13 of 14 games for the Black Bears...Lead team in assists...Earned assists vs. Manhattan College (9/18) in Maine's 4-1 win, recorded the game tying assist in a 1-1 draw with Boston University (9/24), and tallied the assist in Maine's equalizer against New Hampshire (10/5) to earn a 1-1 draw. IN 2004: Started three games before suffering season-ending injury...earned a medical hardship waiver for the 2004 campaign...notched two assists in 3-2 OT win versus Manhattan College (9/19). IN 2003: Named to the America East First Team... one of just three players and lone returner to start all 19 games... recorded an assist in Maine's 3-1 win over Niagara (9/1) and in a 1-1 against Dartmouth (9/20). IN 2002: Named to the America East All-Rookie Team... saw action in all 16 games for the Black Bears, starting nine... scored lone goal of the season in 3-2 loss to Harvard. BEFORE UMAINE: Prepped for coach Marc Haskell at the Berkshire School... earned Western New England and All-New England Prep School honors... earned Penobscot Valley Conference first team honors in 1998 and 1999 while at Ellsworth High School... set single season and single game assist records while at Ellsworth High School... a Junior Olympian in skiing for three years. Friend is a business major and the son of Cooper and Meredith Friend, and brother of Megan.
