Velas Named to America East All-Rookie Team
Nov. 9, 2004 The America East named the All-Conference and All Rookie Team on Monday afternoon, November 8th. Freshman forward Jimmy Velas (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) was named to the 2004 All Rookie team. 2004 All-Rookie Team includes; Matt Watson of UMBC, Adam Chavez of Binghamton, Roland Erlichman and Shane Westbrook of Boston University, Jimmy Velas of University of Maine, Bryan Moffa of UMBC, Bryan Stewart and Matt Low of New Hampshire, Dan Cukar and Fahaya Musa of Stony Brook and Jake Wallace of Vermont. Velas appeared in all 16 games this year for the Black Bears, starting six. Velas was third on the team in scoring with three goals and two assists for eight points. Velas earned Rookie of the Week honors twice this season. He was honored after scoring two goals versus UMass (9/11/04) including the game winner as Maine won 3-1 and again when he assisted on the first goal, and scored the tying goal in a 2-2 tie with conference rival UNH (9/25). Velas also tallied an assist in a 2-1 loss against Sacred Heart (9/17). Before Maine, Velas was captain for head coach David Halligan (Maine Alumnus) at Falmouth High School... led Falmouth to four consecutive state championships from 2000-2003 which was nationally ranked twice in the NSCAA Final Poll... ended his career at Falmouth with a record of 67-2-3... was a two-time All-Region and All-State selection... in 2003 was selected as an NSCAA All-American, Gatorade Player of the Year, Portland Press Herald and Lewiston Sun Journal Player of the Year... scored 33 goals and added 13 assists his senior season to raise his career totals to 77 goals and 36 assists... won the 2003 state cup championship with the Coastal Soccer Club. Jimmy is an undeclared major, son of Lisa and James Velas, and brother of Luke.
