Swimming Splits Meet With Providence

ROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed on Sunday in a dual meet hosted by Providence College. The women's team picked up a 173-127 victory, while men's team was narrowly defeated 139-141. Tal Shpaizer won three individual events for the women and Nathan Richard took two first place finishes for the men. In the women's meet, Lauren Viles (Oakland, Maine) won the 100 free with a time of 1:02.95, while Heather Griffin (Presque Isle, Maine) was second in 1:03.19. Viles also picked up a second place finish in the 50 free with a time of 28.42. Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) was first in the 200 free with a time of 2:14.40 and also was first in the 400 free in 4:40.26. In the 800 free, Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.) was first in 9:45.96. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) was first in the 100 back in 1:07.00 and was also first in the 200 back in 2:23.4 and the 200 IM in 2:26.208. Courtney Healey (Reading, Mass.) was second in the 200 back in 2:32.62. In the 100 breast, Shelbi Settlage (Bothell, Wash.) was second in 1:18.30 and Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) was second in the 200 breast in 2:50.96. Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) was second in both the 100 fly in 1:07.43 and the 200 fly in 2:28.33. In diving, Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) was first in the one meter as Maine took the top three spots. On the three meter board, Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) was first. The Black Bears also won the 200 medley relay.
For the men, Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) won the 400 free in 4:33.32 and Jason Stevens (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) was second in 4:33.36. Freshman Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vermont) was first in the 100 breast, while Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) was second in 1:10.26. Card added a first place finish in the 200 breast, touching in 2:37.49. Richard was first in the 100 butterfly as well, with a time of 1:01.80. In the 200 IM, Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) took first place with a time of 2:20.82. On the boards, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was first in both the one meter and three meter diving events. The Black Bears pulled out wins in both the 200 free and 200 medley relays. On Monday, the Black Bears will continue their road trip with a meet at Fairfield.
