Maine Swimmers Sink Providence

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving team hosted Providence College on Sunday afternoon at Wallace Pool, with the women getting a 177-119 win, while the men picked up a 170-123 win in the final home meet of the season. Martin Fitch won three events for the men, while three women's swimmers each won two events for the Black Bears.

The women started fast, coming up with a win in the 200 medley relay. Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) won the 1000 free in a time of 10:42.60, which was followed by a win in the 200 free by Karin Feldman (Kyrait Motzkin, Israel). Crystie McGrail (Columbia, Md.) won the 100 back in a time of 1:02.99, while Brianna Tibbetts (North Berwick, Maine) was close behind in second place. The Black Bears had a one-two-three sweep in the 50 free, led by Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) in 25.54 and followed by Katrine Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) and Kelsey Wilson (North Adams, Mass.). In diving, Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) took firs tin the one meter and three meter events. Wolters also picked up a first place in the 100 free in 55.69, while Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) took first in the 200 back in 2:19.86. Wilson won the 500 free in 5:23.18, with Feldman a close second. Shpaizer picked up another first place finish with a win in the 100 butterfly in 59.13.

In the men's meet, the Black Bears won the 200 medley relay by one-tenth of a second. Scott Forrestall (Haverhill, Mass.) finished second in the 1000 free at 10:36.28. Andy Magiera (Surry, Maine) picked up a first place finish in the 200 free in 1:49.03, which was followed by a first place finish in the 100 breast by Zach Weinman (Bethleham, Pa.) in 1:03.40. In the 200 butterfly, Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) won first place in 2:07.83. Jason Stevens (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) took first in the 50 free at 23.37. In diving, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) won the one meter and three meter events. Fitch added a second win on the day in the 200 back in 2:04.66, while Weinman added his second win in the 200 breast in 2:21.03 and Magiera added his second win in the 500 free in 5:06.56. Stevens picked up his second win with a first place finish in the 100 butterfly in 59.92. Fitch won his third event of the meet with a win in the 200 IM in 2:04.11.

 

 

The swimmers of the meet for the Black Bears were Crystie McGrail for the women and Scott Forrestall for the men. Keith Burgie was the diver of the meet.
