Orono, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by the Boston College Eagles Saturday afternoon. The men's team lost 229.5 - 102.5 while the women's team fell by a score of 207 - 127.

The men's divers, Keith Burgie and Isaac Forbes, swept both the 1 and 3 meter competitions. Burgie placed first in both events, scoring 291.3 points in the three meter and 270.97 in the one meter. Forbes finished the day with 231 points in the three meter competition and 213.97 in the one meter. On the women's side, Laura Williamson placed third in the one meter event, while Samantha Graham finished in third place in the three meter competition.

The women's team got off to an early lead when the 200 yard medley relay team of Courtney Healey, Megan McLean, Meag Fisher, and Kerstin Fenton placed first in a time of 1:52.79. Healey took home first place in the 100 yard backstroke (1:01.03) and second place in the 200 yard backstroke (2:10.99). McLean won the 200 yard breaststroke in a time of 2:28.19, while Fisher won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:12.72. Colleen Miller and Kiki O'Donnell took the top two places in the 1650 yard freestyle in 17:41.38 and 18:10.32 respectively. Miller also went on to win the 500 yard freestyle in 5:09.52. Caitlin Shelley won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:08.83), came second in the 200 yard IM (2:14.34) and came fourth in the 500 yard freestyle. Mackenzie Grobmyer placed third in the 400 IM (4:44.81).

 

 

The men's team was fueled first and second place finishes from Jeremy Bender and Cully Wakelin. Bender, who took home first place in the 100 yard butterfly (2:01.90), also finished second in the 1650 freestyle (16:45.56) and the 400 IM (4:19.55). Wakelin topped the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:01.87, and finished second in both the 100 free (48.61) and 200 IM (2:03.06). Jamie Young finished third in the 200 yard backstroke (2:04.61) and fifth in the 100 back. John Quinn placed second in the 500 yard freestyle (5:03.73) and tied for third place in the 50 yard freestyle in 22.99 and Dan MacDonald came in sixth in 23.56. Kevin Staples finished fourth in the 100 yard freestyle (49.97). Dustin Carrier finished fifth in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:25.78.

The Black Bears will be back in action when the women's team squares off against the University of New Hampshire on Thursday January 31 at 5:00 pm, at Wallace Pool.
