Swimming Splits Meet With New Hampshire

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed on Thursday night in the final dual meet of the season against New Hampshire at Wallace Pool. The women's team was defeated 136-164, while men's team was picked up a 196-88 win. Tal Shpaizer, Jessie Ellis-Alcaide and Colleen Miller won two individual events each for the women and Nathan Richard and Eric Palmer won two events each to lead the men.

The women began the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. In the 1000 free, Kelsey Wilson (North Adams, Mass.) was the top finisher in fourth place in 11:11.52. Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.10. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) was first in the 100 back in 59.88. The top finisher in the 100 breast was Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) in 1:09.23. In the 200 butterfly, Mackenzie Grobmyer (Alexandria, Va.) was third in 2:16.79. Maine took the top two spots in the 50 free, led by Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) in 24.96, the seventh-best time in the conference this season. Ellis-Alcaide added a win in the 100 free with a time of 55.36. O'Donnell was the top finisher in the 200 back in fourth place at 2:1.08, while Shelbi Settlage (Bothell, Wash.) was the top finisher in the 200 in third at 2:30.99. Miller added a first place finish in the 500 free in 5:09.20. Shpaizer then added a first place finish as well, taking the top spot in the 100 butterfly in 59.38, the seventh-best time in the conference this season. Settlage was first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.10. On the boards, Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) was second on the one meter with 227.18 points and Samantha Hartery (Bangor, Maine) was second in the three meter with 193.95 points. In the final event of the day, the Black Bears took first in the 200 free relay in 1:40.98.

 

 

For the men, the Black Bears won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:39.78. Maine swept the top four spots in the 1000 free, with Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) first in 10:40.75 and Brock Libby (Skowhegan, Maine) was second in 10:59.97. The sweep continued in the 200 free as Maine took the top three spots, led by Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) in 1:52.73. In the 100 back, Brendan Amy (South Portland, Maine) was second in 1:01.22. Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vermont) took first place in the 100 breast with an ECAC qualifing time of 58.27, which was also the third-best time in the conference this season. Kyle Thornton (Manchester, Conn.) was second in the 200 butterfly in 2:26.84. Michael Goede (Omaha, Nebraska) was second in the 50 free in 23.06 and in the 100 free took first place in 50.65. Palmer then added a second place finish in the 200 back in 2:08.47. In the 200 breast, Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) took first in 2:13.33, the eighth-best time in America East this season and an ECAC qualifing time. In the 500 free, Fitch was third in 5:11.14, while Richard added a first place in the 100 butterfly in 54.64. Palmer then added a first place finish in the 200 IM in 2:05.31. In diving, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) had an outstanding meet, taking first in the one meter with 255.98 points and first in the three-meter with 272.10 points. To wrap-up the meet, the 200 free relay team took first in 1:29.88.

The meet marked the 34th and final dual meet between the Maine and New Hampshire men, as New Hampshire will discontinue the program at the end of the season.
