Swimming Completes Day Two Of AE Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed the second day of the America East Championships on Friday night at Boston University. So far in the meet, the Black Bears have set three school records and had numerous strong performances. On Thursday, the first day of competition, the Black Bears opened with Isaac Forbes (Glenburn, Maine) finishing fifth in the one meter diving event with 208.50 points. Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was seventh in the event with 202.30 points. The women's 800 free relay team of Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel), Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.), Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) set a school record with a time of 7:44.61. They were fifth in the event and broke the school record that was set last season by three seconds. The women's 200 medley relay of Megan Wolters, Megan McLean (Walpole, Mass.), Tal Shpaizer and Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) was third in 1:48.31. The men's 800 free relay of Cully Wakelin (Biddeford, Maine), Kevin Staples (Mt. Desert, Maine), Tyler Cox (Morrill, Maine) and Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) was third in 7:14.08. in the final event of the day, the men's 200 medley relay team of Mike Goede (Omaha, Neb.), Chris Card (West Bath, Maine), Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) and John Quinn (Bangor, Maine) was fourth in 1:35.98.
On Friday, nine scoring event finals were held. In the 500 free, Colleen Miller was third overall with a time of 5:01.06, while Megan Wolters was ninth in 5:07.47. In the men's 500 free, freshmen Jamison Young (Richboro, Pa.) and Brendan Amy (South Portland, Maine) were 15th and 16th. Tal Shpaizer was tenth overall in the women's 200 IM in 2:10.82, while Mackenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) was 12th in 2:12.83. In the men's 200 IM, Nathan Richard was fifth overall with a time of 1:55.87. His time, and his trials time of 1:55.02, broke the school record of 1:56.12 that was set in 1979 by Jim Smoragiewicz. Also in the 200 IM, Eric Palmer was 15th in 2:00.61. Jessie Ellis-Alcaide swam the 50 free in 23.84, taking second place overall and also breaking the school record of 23.86 that was set by her sister, Katrine Alcaide in 2001. Freshman Cully Wakelin was eighth in the men's 50 free with a time of 21.65. In the final event of the day, the women were fourth and the men were fifth in the 200 free relay. On the men's side, the Retrievers (313.5 points) extended their lead and Binghamton jumped to second place (252), and Stony Brook follows with 207.5 points. Host Boston University (153) and Maine (152) round out the five-team field. The UMBC women (269) hold their lead over Boston University (232) and New Hampshire (218). With a close battle for fourth place between Maine (155) and Vermont (150), while Stony Brook (119) and Binghamton (119) are tied for sixth place. Day three of the four-day event continues on Saturday with two sessions of events.
