Maine Swimming Competes At America East Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed over the weekend at the America East Championships hosted by Boston University. The women finished fourth overall with 433 points, while the men were sixth overall with 320 points. Five new school records were set in the meet. Maine's top individual finishers were Nathan Richard with a second place finish in the 100 breast and Adi Levy who was second in the 200 butterfly.

The women placed five swimmers in the 500 free event, led by Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) in 5:05.02. Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel), Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.), Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) and Kelsey Wilson (North Adams, Mass.) also scored in the 500 free. In the 200 IM, Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) was sixth in 2:09.03, Shelbi Settlage (Bothell, Wash.) was eighth in 2:10.06 and Crystie McGrail (Columbia, Md.) was twelfth in 2:13.16. Shpaizer's time in the 200 IM set a new school record.Lauren Viles (Oakland, Maine) was sixteenth in the 50 free in 25.27. In the 400 IM, Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) was eighth in 4:43.46, while Brittany Harrington was eleventh in 4:43.54 and Mackenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) was thirteenth in 4:45.36. In the 100 butterfly, Tal Shpaizer was fifth in 58.92 and Adi Levy was ninth in 59.25. Colleen Miller added a fourth place finish in the 200 free in 1:54.39. In the 100 breast, Shelbi Settlage set a new school record with a time of 1:06.69, topping the mark of 1:06.99 set by Katrine Alcaide in 2002. Candace Coville (Titusville, N.J.) was fifteenth in the 100 breast in 1:11.34. In the 100 back, Crystie McGrail was eighth in 1:01.16, Courtney Healey (Reading, Mass.) was eleventh in 1:01.46 and Brianna Tibbetts (North Berwick, Maine) was fifteenth in 1:02.32. Kiki O'Donnell was eighth in the 1650 free in 17:57.73, while Sarah Holmsten was thirteenth in 18:16.18. Maine had four swimmers place in the 200 back, led by Tal Shpaizer in fourth place with a time of 2:05.41. Heather Griffin (Presque Isle, Maine) was fifteenth in the 100 free in 54.48. Maine also had four swimmers place in the 200 breast, led by Shelbi Settlage in sixth place with a time of 2:25.68, the second-fastest time in school history. Adi Levy was second overall in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:08.90. On the one meter board, Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) was fifth with 237.20 points.

 

 

In the women's relays, Maine was fifth in the 800 free, third in the 200 medley, fifth in the 200 free, fifth in the 400 free and fourth in the 400 medley. The 800 free relay team of Tal Shpaizer, Adi Levy, Brittany Harrington and Colleen Miller swam in 7:47.83, eclipsing the school record set in 2002. The 400 medley relay team of Tal Shpaizer, Shelbi Settlage, Adi Levy and Colleen Miller finished in 3:57.15, breaking the school record of 3:57.85 set in 2001.

For the men, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was sixth and Justin Maldonado (Cumberland, Maine) was eighth in the one meter event. The Black Bears were fifth in the 800 free relay, 200 free relay, 400 medley relay, 400 free relay and 200 medley relay. In the 200 IM, Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) was eleventh in 1:59.23 and Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) was fourteenth in 2:00.41. Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) took fifth place in the 50 free with a time of 21.72. In the 400 IM, Fitch was eighth in 4:17.68, while Palmer was tenth in 4:16.11 and Brock Libby (Skowhegan, Maine) was sixteenth in 4:35.54. In the 200 free, Jason Stevens (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) was thirteenth in 1:48.90 and John Quinn (Bangor, Maine) was fifteenth in 1:50.94. Nathan Richard was second in the 100 breast with a time of 57.10. The time broke the school record of 57.43 that was set by Dewey Wyatt in 1987. Also in the 100 breast, Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) was fifth in 58.40, Arthur Moy (Omaha, Neb.) was twelfth in 1:01.63 and Zach Weinman (Bethleham, Pa.) was thirteenth in 1:01.76. In the three meter diving event, Keith Burgie was sixth and Justin Maldonado was eighth. Brock Libby was the top Maine finisher in the 1650 free in 17:46.52. Barrett Nichols (Scarborough, Maine), Kevin Trainor (Veazie, Maine) and Sean Hess (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also scored in the 1650 free. In the 200 back, Zach Weinman, Eric Palmer and Martin Fitch all scored points for the Black Bears. Nathan Richard added a fifth place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.17, while Chris Card was tenth in 2:10.83. Kyle Thornton (Manchester, Conn.) was sixteenth in the 200 butterfly in 2:19.55.

On the women's side, New Hampshire topped all teams with 787 points and was followed closely by UMBC (733). Third-place Boston University (550) placed third and was followed by Maine (433), Stony Brook (367.50), Vermont (314) and Binghamton (210.50). The UMBC men (878.50 points) finished the meet with a decisive 201-point lead over second-place Binghamton University (667.50). Stony Brook University (667) finished only one-half point behind Stony Brook and 190 points ahead of fifth-place Boston University (487). University of Maine (320) and University of New Hampshire (188) rounded out the rest of the competition.
