Maine Swimmers Compete At America East

Baltimore, Md. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed over the weekend at the America East Championships, hosted at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The women finished fourth with 413 points, while the men were sixth with 323 points. The women were led by Megan Wolters who set school records with a win in the 500 free and second place in the 200 back, and added a third place in the 200 free. In the 500 free, junior Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) took first place by .03 seconds as she set a new school record in the event with a time of 4:59.96. Wolters bested the previous Maine record by seven seconds. Also in the 500 free Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) and Kelsey Wilson (North Adams, Mass.) scored points for the Black Bears. In the 200 IM, Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) was eighth with a time of 2:10.56 and Crystie McGrail (Columbia, Md.) was twelfth in 2:13.18. Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) finished sixth in the 50 free in 24.98. In the 400 IM, Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.) and Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) both finished in the top eight with times of 4:39.81 and 4:43.32 respectively. The Black Bears placed three swimmers in the 100 butterfly as Shpaizer was fifth in 58.78, Karin Feldman (Kyrait Motzkin, Israel) seventh in 1:00.00, and McGrail in tenth in 1:00.40. Wolters was third in the 200 free with a time of 1:55.45, with Heather Griffin (Presque Isle, Maine) also placing in the event. Maggie Warren (Lakeville, Mass.) placed in the 100 breast with a time of 1:13.35 and in the 100 back Brianna Tibbetts (North Berwick, Maine) placed tenth with a time of 1:01.69. In the 1650 free, Holmsten picked up a fourth place finish with a time of 17:54.77, with O'Donnell and Elissa Patalano scoring points. Wolters came up strong again in the 200 back, setting a school record with a second place finish in 2:04.62. Shpaizer was fifth in the 200 back in 2:06.82, while McGrail was tenth in 2:12.20 and Tibbetts scored points with a time of 2:14.86. Griffin and Ellis-Alcaide both scored in the 100 free, while Feldman was ninth in the 200 fly with a time of 2:15.81. In the 200 breast, Harrington was eighth in 2:28.07, while O'Donnell also scored with a time of 2:33.87. In diving, Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) and Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) both placed in the three meter event. Maine's 200 medley relay was second overall with a time of 1:49.72.
For the men, Jason Stevens (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) scored points in the 500 free with a time of 5:02.06. In the 200 IM, Andy Magiera (Surry, Maine) was fifth with a time of 1:59.73, while Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) also scored for the Black Bears. Freshman Michael Goede (Omaha, Neb.) placed in the 50 free with a time of 23.09, while senior Scott Forrestall (Haverhill, Mass.) placed in the 400 IM with a time of 4:32.76. In the 100 butterfly, Dan Thornton (Milford, Maine) placed with a time of 1:01.54. Maine had three swimmers place in the 200 free, led by Stevens in 1:48.53 and followed by Zach Gray (Windsor, Maine) in 1:48.56 and Magiera in 1:51.10. In the 100 breast, Zach Weinman (Bethleham, Pa.) and Dustin Carrier (Lewiston, Maine) placed with times of 1:02.68 and 1:05.28 respectively. Goede added a tenth place finish in the 100 back in 57.36. In the 1650 free, Maine had four swimmers place, led by Forrestall in 17:47.59, Gray in 17:57.43, Barrett Nichols (Scarborough, Maine) in 18:36.84, and Sean Hess (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in 19:08.67. Fitch finished eighth in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.88, and he was followed by Weinman and Goede with times of 2:05.26 and 2:09.05 respectively. Stevens scored in the 100 free in 49.68 and Weinman added points in the 200 breast in 2:19.00. Magiera finished sixth overall in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.19. In diving, freshman Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was fifth in the one meter event with 249 points and eighth in the three meter event with 345.95 points. Chris Rodway (Brewer, Maine) and Issac Forbes (Glenburn, Maine) also both scored points for Maine in the three meter.
