Swimming Splits Season Opener At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, Rhode Island - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams started the season at Rhode Island on Sunday afternoon. The women won 193-107, while the men were defeated 188-112. Tal Shpaizer led the women with three first place finishes, while Nathan Richard and Keith Burgie both won two events for the men. In the women's meet, Maine got off to a strong start by taking first and second in the 200 medley relay. Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) was second in the 1000 free in 10:59.53. In the 200 free, Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) took first place in 1:57.25. Later in the meet, Miller also took first place in the 500 free in 5:14.67. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) finished first in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.13. Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) was second in the 100 breast. Maine took first and second in the 200 butterfly as Mackenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) was first in 2:13.95 and Adi Levy (Givatayim, Israel) was second in 2:14.01. Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) was first in the 50 free in 25.00 and added a first place in the 100 free with a time of 54.87. Maine also took the top two spots in the 200 back as Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) was first in 2:11.60 and Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) was second in 2:13.64. In the 200 breast, Kiki O'Donnell was first in 2:33.30 and Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) was second in 2:34.29. The top finishes continued in the 100 butterfly when Tal Shpaizer was first in 59.68 and Mackenzie Grobmyer was second in 1:02.26. Tal Shpaizer and Mackenzie Grobmyer also took first and second in the 200 IM in 2:13.66 and 2:18.68, respectively. Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) was second in the one meter with 213.15points and also second in the three meter with 201.30 points. The women wrapped up the meet with a first place finish in the 400 free relay.
For the men, Brendan Amy (South Portland, Maine) was second in the 1000 free with a time of 10:55.83. Mike Goede (Omaha, Neb.) was second in 58.35 in the 100 back and was also second in the 100 free in 50.16. Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) took first place in the 100 breast with a time of 58.14 and Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) was second in 1:00.53. Richard added a first place finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:11.11. Cully Wakelin (Biddeford, Maine) was third in the 50 free in 23.02. In the 500, Jamie Young (Richboro, Pa.) was second in 5:13.71 and in the 100 butterfly Chris Card was second in 56.20. Maine won the 400 free relay in 3:22.23. Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) took first place in the three meter with 222.45 points and was first in the one meter with 209.78 points. Both teams will swim next Sunday at Dartmouth.
