![]() Maine Swimmers Drop Season Opener at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated by Rhode Island in the first meet of the season on Sunday afternoon. Maine's women were defeated by only one point 150 to 149, while the men were defeated 162-133. On the women's side, the Black Bears were led by Tal Shpaizer, who won three individual events, and the men were led by Zach Weinman with two first place finishes. The women began the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:53.68. Megan Wolters (Orono, Maine) won the 1000 free in a time of 10:49.76. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) won her first event of the day in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.72. Wolters picked up her second first place finish of the day in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.50, eight seconds faster than the second place finisher. Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.) won first place in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.48. Shpaizer picked up another win in the 100 fly and added a third first place finish with a time of 2:14.62 in the 200 IM. In diving, Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) and Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) took first and second place in the one meter event. Pratt and Scott also finished one-two in the three meter event. In the men's meet, Scott Forrestall (Haverhill, Mass.) won the 1000 free in 11:06.68. Zach Weinman (Bethleham, Pa.) won the 100 breast in 1:03.68, nearly five seconds faster than his nearest competitor. Weinman also won first in the 200 back. Andy Magiera (Surry, Maine) won the 100 fly in 55.81. The men's team wrapped up the meet with a first place finish in the 400 free relay. In diving, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine), Chris Rodway (Brewer, Maine) and Justin Alley (Bangor, Maine) took the top three spots in the one meter event. Rodway and Burgie took first and second, respectively in the three meter event. The swimmers and divers of the meet for Maine were Tal Shpaizer, Kelsey Wilson, Jason Stevens and Keith Burgie. Next weekend the women will host Vermont on Saturday, November 6 at 11:00 pm, while both teams will face Stony Brook on Sunday, November 7, at 11:00 am.
