Maine Swimming Defeated At Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams were defeated on Sunday afternoon at Dartmouth. The women lost 168-132, while the men were defeated 174-121. Tal Shpaizer led the women with wins in two individual events, while Chris Card, Nathan Richard and Eric Palmer all had first place finishes for the men.

For the women, Maine started with a win in the 200 medley relay. In the 1000 free, Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) was second with a time of 10:53.21. Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) took first place in the 200 free in 1:55.55, and she was second in the 500 free in 5:14.41. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) was first in the 100 back in 1:00.28 and also first in the 100 butterfly in 59.89. Shpaizer was also second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.14. Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) won the 50 free in 24.76, and she added a second place finish in the 100 free in 54.37. In the 200 back, Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) was first with a time of 2:10.80. In the 200 free relay, the Black Bears took first place with a time of 1:41.80.

In the men's meet, the Black Bears opened the day with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay. Maine took the top two spots in the 100 breast as Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) was first in 58:38 and Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) was second in 1:04.80. Cully Wakelin (Biddeford, Maine) was second in the 50 free in 22.87. Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) was first in the 200 breast in 2:14.86, four seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Eric Palmer finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.93. Nathan Richard added a second place finish in the 100 butterfly in 53.87. Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was second in the three meter event with 254.33 points. The men wrapped up the day by winning the 200 free relay in 1:29.89.
