Swimming and Diving Splits Meet with Bryant and Rhode Island

Kingston, Rhode Island - The University of Maine swimming and diving program split their first duel meet of the season. The men's team (1-0) won their season opener as they beat the Bryant Bulldogs 178-110. The women's team (2-2) split the meet, sinking Bryant 237-51 and narrowly falling to Rhode Island 142-158.

The men's team was led by Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) who finished the 200 yard butterfly in 2:02.31, good for first place. Maine's Corey Stogner (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had a strong day as well, placing first in the 100 yard breaststroke and second in the 200 yard breaststroke, with times of 1:03.09 and 2:18.60, respectively. Captain John Quinn (Bangor, Maine) scored several points for the Black Bears with three top-three finishes. Quinn claimed third in the 100 yard freestyle with a 50.02 time, swam to a third place finish in the 500 yard freestyle in 4:55.59 and led his 400 yard freestyle relay team to second place with a 3:21.60 finish.

Megan McLean (Walpole, Mass.) stepped up for the women's team, winning the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.27 and the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:30.64. Two freshman made names for themselves as Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine) claimed first in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.57 and Lauren Thornbrough (San Diego, Calif.) won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:12.60. Rolling over her success from the Black Bears' first meet, Mimi Chovanec (St. Augustine, Fla.) finished the 500 yard freestyle in 5:11.87, good for first place. Maine's steadfast contributor Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) also finished first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:40.33.

 

 

The Black Bear swimming and diving teams will return to the pool on Saturday, November 8, at 11 am when they welcome the Stony Brook Seawolves to the Stanley M. Wallace pool.
