Swimming and Diving Competes in Boston University Invitational

Boston, Mass. - The University of Maine swimming and diving program spent the weekend competing in a three-day invitational at Boston University. The women's team finished seventh out of nine teams with 198 points, while the men's team finished fifth among six teams with 243.5 points. Captain Colleen Miller (Missoula, Mont.) led the Black Bear women with a fifth place finish in the 1650 freestyle and Andrew Mackeil (Biddeford, Maine) led the men with a ninth place finish in the 200 butterfly. Friday and Saturday served as qualifying days for the 15 squads vying for a place in Sunday's finals. Maine's men and women combined to qualify for 35 spots in Sunday's individual events. The women's program got off to a great start when Miller raced to a fifth place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:35.70 and teammate Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) was right behind her with a 17:44.98 time that was good enough for seventh place. Freshman Alicia Hahn (Falmouth, Maine) scored another great finish as she placed ninth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:12.42. Fellow freshman Lauren Thornborough (San Diego, Calif.) added a tenth place finish with a 2:09.79 time in the 200 butterfly. Maine's 400 freestyle relay team of Samantha Bond (Temple, N.H.), Kari Boffa (Falmouth, Maine), Kerstin Fenton (Dixon, Calif.) and Miller placed 11th with a time of 3:39.32. The Black Bear men also collected several top-ten finishes, led by Mackeil whose ninth place 2:01.55 time in the 200 butterfly was the best individual performance. Jeremy Bender (St. Paul, Minn.) and Corey Stogner (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) each earned 10th place finishes, Bender swam the 1650 freestyle in 16:50.18 while Stogner swam the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.22. The team's best overall finish came in the 400 freestyle relay where a team of Kevin Staples (Mt. Desert, Maine), Ryan Wonsor (Killington, Vt.), John Quinn (Bangor, Maine) and Dan MacDonald (Melrose, Mass.) placed eighth with a time of 3:18.79.
The Maine swimming and diving teams have another big meet on the horizon as they will travel to Kingston on Friday, Dec. 5, for the two-day Rhode Island Invitational. --UM-- |
