![]() Swimming Competes At Rhode Island

KINGSTON, Rhode Island - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the Harold Anderson Invitational hosted by Rhode Island on Friday and Saturday. The Maine women were first overall with 847 points, while the men were second overall with 598 points. Tal Shpaizer won two events for the women and Nathan Richard won two for the men. The Maine women started the meet with a first place finish in the 400 medley relay and added a first place in the 200 free relay. Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) was second in the 500 free with a time of 5:15.81 and also was first in the 1000 free in 10:46.55. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) won the 200 IM in a time of 2:13.44 and also won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.25. She added a second place in the 200 back in 2:11.70. Jessie Ellis-Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) won the 50 free in 24.83 and was second in the 100 free in 53.85. Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) was second overall in the 400 IM in 4:46.24 and Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) was second in the 100 back with a time of 1:01.86. Maine was also first in the 200 medley relay Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) was fifth in the one meter and third in the three meter event. For the men, Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) took second place in the 200 IM in 2:01.63 and later in the meet took first place in the 100 breast in 58.95. He was also firs tin the 200 breast with a time of 2:12.14. Cully Wakelin (Biddeford, Maine) was third in the 50 free in 22.61. The Black Bears were second in the 200 medley relay. In diving, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was third in the three meter and second in the one meter.
In the women's meet, Maine was first with 847 points, followed by Vermont (736), Rhode Island (690), Providence (455), Holy Cross (418) and Fairfield (296). For the men, Rhode Island was first with 821 points, followed by Maine (598), Providence (551), Holy Cross (345) and Fairfield (330).
