KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving team took part in the Harold Anderson Invitational held at the University of Rhode Island on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4. Megan Wolters and Tal Shpaizer led the women's team with three first place finishes each for the women's team and Andy Magiera and Keith Burgie both had wins for the men.

Maine was led in the women's meet by Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) who won the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.98 and also won the 100 back with a time of 1:00.23 and the 100 butterfly in 59.58. Megan Wolters (Orono, Maine) finished first in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.02, with Kelsey Wilson (North Adams, Mass.) finishing third at 2:00.65. Wolters also won the 200 back in 2:07.46, nearly five seconds faster than her nearest competitor. Wolters made it three wins with a first place in the 500 free with a time of 5:11.25. Brittany Harrington (Alexandria, Va.) took first place in the 1000 free in a time of 11:00.30. She was followed by Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) with a third place finish at 11:04.24. In the 400 IM, the Black Bears finished strong as Harrington took second place at 4:45.69, followed by Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) in third and Holmsten in fifth place. Karin Feldman (Kyriat Motzkin, Israel) was third in the 200 butterfly at 2:19.17. Katrine Alcaide (Harpswell, Maine) was second in the 50 free at 25.49.

 

 

The Black Bears finished second and fifth in the 400 medley relay and took second and fourth in the 200 free relay. In the 200 medley relay, Maine finished first and third, while in the 400 free Maine was first and third. In the one meter diving, Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) took second place, while Jessica Pratt (Eddington, Maine) was third. Scott was first in the three meter event, with Pratt finishing third.

On the men's side, Andy Magiera (Surry, Maine) won the 200 butterfly in 2:06.24 and placed second in the 100 butterfly. Scott Forrestall (Haverhill, Mass.) finished sixth in the 1000 free at 10:57.36, with Barrett Nichols (Scarborough, Maine) and Sean Hess (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in eighth and ninth. Michael Goede (Omaha, Neb.) finished second in the 100 back at 58.21. In the 200 IM, Martin Fitch (Bangor, Maine) took sixth place at 2:05.25, while Zach Weinman (Bethleham, Pa.) was eighth. Fitch was also third in the 400 IM at 4:23.38 and third in the 200 back. Weinman was third in the 200 breast at 2:22.13. Jason Stevens (West Boothbay Harbor, Maine) and Zach Gray (Windsor, Maine) were fourth and sixth in the 200 free.

In the three meter diving, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was second, followed by Justin Alley (Bangor, Maine) and Issac Forbes (Glenburn, Maine) in third and fourth. In the one meter event, Burgie finished first, with Alley taking third place. The Black Bears finished fourth in the 400 medley relay, second in the 200 medley relay, fourth in the 400 free relay and third in the 200 free relay.

Swimmers of the meet were Tal Shpaizer, Lauren Viles and Heather Griffin for the women and Scott Forrestall and Zach Gray for the men. Justin Alley was the diver of the meet.
