Swimmers Commit To Maine

May 13, 2005

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's swimming and diving team has received National Letters of Intent from four student-athletes and have commitments from three additional student-athletes beginning in the fall of 2005. In addition, the men's swimming and diving program has commitments from seven student-athletes.

"This is one of our largest classes in a number of years," said head coach Jeff Wren. "We expect that this class will strengthen and deepen our team in virtually every area."

National Letters of Intent were signed by Mackenzie Grobmyer, Courtney Healey, Adi Levy and Colleen Miller, who join Kari Boffa from Falmouth, Maine, who signed an NLI in the early signing period. Megan Barret, Heather Leach and Alyson Wintle have also committed to attend the University of Maine.

Mackenzie Grobmyer is from Charlottesville, Virginia. She currently swims for SMAC YMCA and USS team in Waynesboro, Virginia. Her best events are the 200 fly and 400 IM, but Grobmyer is a versitile swimmer who will also bring depth to the breaststroke and freestyle events.

Courtney Healey, from Reading, Massachusetts, swims for the Andover Y and is a talented swimmer who is expected to be an immediate contributor to the Black Bears. She is a backstroke specialist who may also see action in distance freestyle.

Adi Levy is from Givataym, Israel, where she swims for Maccabi Kyriat Ono, the same team as graduating senior Karin Feldman. Levy is a butterfly specialist who has also branched out into the backstroke this year. She also swims IM and freestyle events and is expected to see action in all these areas.

Colleen Miller, from Missoula, Montana, swims for the Missoula Aquatic Club. A middle distance freestyler and backstroker who holds the state record in the 200 free, she will be the first swimmer at UMaine from Montana. She made significant improvements this season putting her in a great position to make an immediate impact on the team.

Megan Barret is from Farmington, Connecticut and dives for Peter Suydam out of Trinity College. She is a talented diver who is expected to contribute immediately and has experience on both one and three meter boards. She won the Class L State Diving meet and came in third in her Connecticut Championship Open Meet.

Heather Leach is from Atlanta, Georgia and currently swims for Swim Atlanta. She primarily swims freestyle and backstroke events and is the daughter of former men's ice hockey assistant coach Jay Leach.

Alyson Wintle, from Belgrade, Maine, swims for Messalonskee High School and Waterville Dolfins. She was 2005 YMCA state champion in the 100 free and swims freestyle and backstroke events.

The men's swimming program has had seven student-athletes commit to attend the University of Maine this fall. John Bogart (South Portland, Maine), Doug Moulton (Alfred, Maine), Arthur Moy (Omaha, Neb.), Nathan Richard (Panton, Vt.), Kyle Thornton (Manchester, Conn.), Kevin Trainor (Veazie, Maine) and John Quinn (Bangor, Maine) will be joining the Black Bears.

The eligibility of all student-athletes is contingent upon admission to the University of Maine and compliance with all NCAA rules, including registration with the NCAA Clearinghouse.
