Oct. 23, 2007

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams were each picked to finish fifth in the 2007 America East Preseason Poll, which was announced on Tuesday by the conference. The voting for the preseason poll was done by the league's seven head coaches.

UMBC was picked to win on the men's side with 16 points and four first-place votes. Binghamton (12 points) was second, followed by Boston University (11 points; 1 first-place vote) in third and Stony Brook in fourth (7 points). Maine received four points in the poll.

The Retrievers were also picked to win on the women's side with 34 points and four first-place votes. New Hampshire was second with 31 points (2 first-place votes), followed by BU in third (28 points; 1 first-place vote), and Vermont in fourth (20 points). Maine (17 points), Binghamton (10 points) and Stony Brook (7 points) were tabbed to finish fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

The men's team will return the services of Cully Wakelin, who placed ninth in the 100-yard freestyle at the America East Championships last year. The women's team will benefit from the return on Colleen Miller, who finished third in the 1650-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle at last season's conference championships.

Both Black Bear teams will open the 2007-08 season on Saturday, when they play host to Rhode Island at Wallace Pool on the Orono campus. The meet will begin with the diving competition at 11 a.m., followed by the swimming events at 12 p.m. Admission for the meet is free.
