Black Bears Track Competes Over Weekend

The University of Maine men's track team competed at the Terrier All-Comers meet held at Boston University, while the women's team finished third in the Challenge Cup at Brown University.

For the women's team, Silvia Scaldaferri (West Vancouver, British Columbia) was second in the 55 meters with a time of 7.47. Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) took second place in the 400 meters in 59.61, while Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) was second in the 500 meters in 1:18.90. In the 800 meters, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) took first place with a time of 2:15.99. Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine) won the 55 meter hurdles in 8.31. The Black Bears took first and second in the long jump, with Scaldaferri going 5.28 meters for the win and Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) in second. McCusker also finished second in the triple jump. Overall, Maine had 127 points for third place, while Brown (219) and Rhode Island (186) finished ahead of the Black Bears. Holy Cross (88) and Providence (41) also participated in the Challenge Cup.

For the men's team, Sydney Harrison (Phippsburg, Maine) finished fifth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.70. Christopher Jodoin (Uxbridge, Mass.) was eighth in the 400 meters at 51.70. In the mile run, Paul Rupprecht (Yonkers, N.Y.) took fourth place with a time of 4:15.48, followed by Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) in fifth place at 4:16.39. Rupprecht also finished third in the 1000 meters at 2:32.46. In the 800 meters, Drake was third in 1:57.61, with Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) in fourth at 1:58.80. Jeff Caron (Auburn, Maine) was second in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:24. 20, while Nate Holmes (Westbrook, Maine) was second in the 55 meter hurdles. The Black Bears also picked up a win the in the 4x400 meter relay. Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) cleared 4.40 meters for third place in the pole vault. Anthony Morgan (South Portland, Maine) was fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 15.65 meters.
