ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's indoor track team competed on Friday at the Sorlein Track Invitational hosted at Rhode Island, while the women's indoor track team competed on Sunday at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard University. The men finished fourth out of eleven teams with 62.5 points and the women finished second out of 21 teams with 56 total points.

On Friday, the men were strong in the distance events. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was second in the mile with a time of 4:18.41. In the 500 meters, Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) was second in 1:05.40. Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) was fourth in the 800 meters in 1:57.30. Maine continued to excel in the distance events as David Manz (Underhill, Vt.) was eighth in the 1000 in 2:34.39. Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was fourth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:52.51 and David Englehutt (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) was seventh in 9:01.37. In the 55 meter hurdles, Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) was eighth in 8.19 after an 8.10 in the preliminaries. The Black Bears were fourth in the 4x400 relay and third in the 4x800 relay. In the field events, Kahbir Edwards (Portland, Maine) was fifth in the high jump in 1.90 meters and also was fifth in the long jump in 6.55 meters. Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) was fourth in the pole vault, clearing 4.26 meters. In the triple jump, Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) was fourth with 13.12 meters and Ben Toothaker (Hampden, Maine) was eighth in 12.46 meters.

 

 

At Harvard on Sunday, Maine had three finishers in the top eight in the 400 meters. Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) was third in 59.77, Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) was fifth in 60.56 and Courtney Francis (Waltham, Mass.) was eighth in 62.67. Vicki Tolton (Smithers, B.C.) was fourth in the 200 meters in 25.75 and Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine) was second in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.92. In the finals of the 60 meter dash, Vicki Tolton was sixth in 8.07 and Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was seventh in 8.08. Heather Jovanelli (Brewer, Maine) was sixth overall in the mile, crossing the line in 5:01.23. In the 800 meters, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was seventh with a time of 2:15.34. In the shot put, Maegan Burke (Kennebunk, Maine) was second with a throw of 11.61 meters and Mary McDonough (Newton, Mass.) was fifth in 11.02 meters. The Black Bears took the top two spots in the pole vault as Heather Zavadak (Smithers, B.C.) cleared 3.36 meters and Shira Panelli (Salinas, Calif.) was second in 3.20 meters. In the high jump, Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) was sixth in 1.57 meters. Finally, in the triple jump the Black Bears had three scoring jumps. Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) was third in 10.78, Carly Bunyan (Troy, Nova Scotia) was fourth in 10.35 and Samantha Homer was sixth at 10.20 meters.
