Men's Track Competes At Valentines Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's indoor track and field team competed on Friday in the Valentines Invitational hosted by Boston University. While no team scores were recorded, the Black Bears had several top ten performances, including a first place finish in the 55 meters by Arel Gordon.

Arel Gordon (Rochester, N.Y.) tied his school record for the second time in less than a week when he blazed to a 6.22 finish in the 55 meters for first place. Gordon also was third overall in the 200 meters in 21.68, which broke the school record of 21.98 set by Joshua Mishou in 1998. In the mile run, Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was 13th overall with a time of 4:12.09 and Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) was 24th in 4:15.18. Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) had a strong finish in the 800 meters in 1:51.99 for seventh place. Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) was 19th in the 800 with a time of 1:54.03. In the 5000 meters, Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was ninth overall with a time of 14:36.63. Maxwell Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) was fifth in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles in 7.76.

In the field events, Jeff Ramos (Turner, Maine) was tenth in the high jump, going 1.93 meters. Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) and Skip Edwards (Portland, Maine) cleared 1.83 meters in the high jump. In the triple jump, Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) was 18th wth a distance of 12.64 meters.

 

 

In addition, the men's distance relay competed on Saturday afternoon at the Valentines Invitational, with the Black Bears' team of Donald Drake (Portland, Maine), Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.), Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) and Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) finished third overall with a time of 9:56.51. The time set a new school record, topping the mark of 9:57.84 set in 1994.

The women's track and field teams will compete in the Valentines Invitational on Saturday in Boston. Both teams will compete in the America East Indoor Championships next weekend at Boston University. For more information on Maine Athletics, please visit www.GoBlackBears.com.
