BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine women's indoor track and field team competed in the America East Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday at Boston University. The men finished fifth overall with 79 points and the women were seventh overall with 59 points. Maine was led by Arel Gordon, who won the 55 meters with a new America East record time, Eric Libby with a win in the 500 meters and Donald Drake with a 1000 meter victory.

In the 55 meters, Arel Gordon (Rochester, N.Y.) set a school record and a conference record with a time of 6.19 in the preliminaries. In the finals, he ran a 6.25 for first place. His time is an NCAA provisional time and also tied the facility record. Also in the 55 meters, Andrew Horner (Kennebunk, Maine) was ninth with a time of 6.91. In the 200 meters, Arel Gordon ran the preliminaries in 21.29, which set a conference record and a new school record. In the 200 meter finals, Gordon was injured in the second turn and did not finish the race. In the 500 meters, Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) took first place in 1:03.33. Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) was fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.86, while Daniel Voner (Dresden, Maine) was eighth in 1:56.77. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) won the 1000 meters in 2:24.65, nearly three seconds faster than the second place finisher. In the 5000 meters, Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was a close second in 14:28.08. Maxwell Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) was fifth in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles in 7.74. The Black Bears 4x400 relay was fifth, the 4x800 meter relay was third and the distance medley relay was seventh.

For the men in the field events, the Black Bears took three of the top six spots in the high jump. Skip Edwards (Portland, Maine) was fourth at 1.93 meters, while Jeff Ramos (Turner, Maine) and Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) were fifth and sixth jumping 1.93 meters. In the long jump, Skip Edwards was fifth in 6.79 meters. Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) was sixth in the triple jump with a distance of 13.50 meters.

On the women's side of the meet, Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick) was fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 25.42. In the 400 meters, Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) was sixth in the finals in 58.61. In the finals of the 500 meters, Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine) was fifth in 1:18.05. Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was second overall in the 800 meters with a time of 2:10.78, which set a new school record in the event. In the 1000 meters, Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) was fourth overall with a time of 2:54.38 and Stephanie Jette (Lovell, Maine) was sixth in 2:57.66. The Maine 4x400 meter relay was sixth, the 4x800 meter relay was third and the distance medley relay was ninth.

In the field events for the women, Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) was second overall in the high jump at 1.63 meters. In the pole vault, Allyson Thomas (Auburn, Maine) was fourth overall, jumping 3.30 meters. Tanya Simard (North Bay, Ontario) was seventh in the triple jump at 10.71 meters. In the weight throw, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) was fourth overall with a throw of 14.95 meters, while Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) was sixth at 14.61 meters.

The men's championship was won by Albany with 203.5 points. They were followed by New Hampshire (128.5), Boston University (114), Binghamton (92), Maine (79), UMBC (74), Stony Brook (64), Vermont (23) and Hartford (1). The women's title went to Boston University with 178 points. Albany (155), New Hampshire (112), Binghamton (88), Vermont (79), UMBC (69), Maine (59), Stony Brook (32) and Hartford (8) rounded out the field.
