Maine Track Competes At America East Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's indoor track teams competed in the America East Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, which were hosted by Boston University. The Maine women finished third overall with 91 points, while the men were sixth with 50 points. Maine's Heather Zavaduk was the conference champion in the pole vault and Kathryn Souviney won the pentathlon. On Friday for the women, the distance medley relay was eighth in 13:20.07. Heather Zavaduk (Smithers, B.C.) won the title in the pole vault by clearing 3.60 meters, six inches higher than the second place finisher. Also in the pole vault, Shira Panelli (Salinas, Calif.) tied for fifth by clearing 3.30 meters. In the long jump, Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) was eighth with a jump of 5.18 meters. Maine placed two competitors in the weight throw as Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) was third with a throw of 15.42 meters and Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) was fifth with a throw of 14.76 meters. On Saturday, Vicki Tolton (Smithers, B.C.) was seventh in the 55 meter dash in 7.44 seconds and she added a fourth place finish in the 200 meters with a time of 25.11. In the 400 meters, Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) was seventh in 59.21 seconds. Heather Jovanelli (Brewer, Maine) was eighth in the mile in 5:05.69. In the 800 meters, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) finished strong in third place with a time of 2:13.04. In the 55 meter hurdles, Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine) was third in 8.31 and Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) was seventh in 8.57. The Black Bears added a second place finish in the 4x800 relay and a seventh place finish in the 4x400 relay. In the high jump, Erin Hatch was second overall, jumping 1.67 meters, while Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) was eighth in the long jump at 5.18 meters. In the shot put, Micralyn Wiechman was sixth with a throw of 11.90 meters and Maegan Burke (Kennebunk, Maine) was eighth with a throw of 11.81 meters. In the pentathlon, Kathryn Souviney took the individual championship with 3508 points.
In the men's meet on Friday, Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was fifth overall in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:41.82. The Black Bears distance medley relay was eighth with a time of 10:45.91. On Saturday, Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) was third in the 500 meters with a time of 1:04.47. In the mile, Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was third in 4:11.66 and in the 800 meters Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) was fourth in 1:55.80. The Black Bears added a third place finish in the 4x800 meter relay and a seventh place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. In the high jump, Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) jumped 1.93 meters to take fifth place. Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) was fifth in the triple jump, going 13.54 meters. In the shot put, Dzigbodi Ababio (Willingboro, N.J.) was second overall with a throw of 14.97 meters. In the heptathlon, Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) was fourth with 4502 points. The Albany men finished the meet with 193 points, while UMBC (148) and the University of New Hampshire (127.50) finished at second and third, respectively. In fourth place was Boston University with 100 points, followed by Binghamton University (86.50) and University of Maine (50). Stony Brook University (30), University of Vermont (22) and University of Hartford (20) rounded out the nine-team field. On the women's side, Boston University (195) took the meet over second-place Albany (165.50) by 30.5 points. Maine (91) and New Hampshire (84.50) finished third and fourth, respectively. They were followed by UMBC (84), Binghamton (71), Vermont (53), Stony Brook (33) and Hartford (3). Next up for the Black Bears, both teams will compete in the New England Indoor Championships, which will be held on February 24 and 25 at Boston University.
