Maine Track Competes At New England Championships

BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's indoor track teams competed in the New England Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, which were hosted by Boston University. The Maine women finished fifth overall with 30 points, while the men were twelfth with 20 points. Hana Pelletier was the 800 meter champion.

For the women, Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) won the 800 meters in 2:10.00, a new school record. The previous record was 2:11.53, which was set in 1993 by Charla Harrie. Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) was fifth in the 500 meters with a time of 1:15.83. The Black Bears 4x800 meter relay was second in 9:14.23. In the high jump, Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) was fifth, jumping 1.67 meters. Heather Zavaduk (Smithers, B.C.) jumped 3.45 meters in the pole vault to finish eighth. In the triple jump, Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) was sixth with a jump of 11.60 meters.

On the men's side, Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was the top finsher for the Black Bears as he took second place in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:46.28. Eric Libby (Hampden, Maine) ran the 500 meters in 1:04.13 for fifth place. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was eighth in the mile with a time of 4:14.17. Maxwell Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) was eighth in the 55 meter hurdles in 7.81. The Black Bears 4x800 meter relay team was third, crossing the line in 7:41.62.
