Track Finishes First Day Of America East Championships

BALTIMORE, Md. - The University of Maine men's and women's track and field teams competed in the first day of the America East Championships hosted by UMBC. The women were sixth with 19 points and the men fourth with 19 points after the first day. Maine was led by Clarissa Michalak with a victory in the hammer throw and Jeff Ramos with a win in the high jump.

For the women, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) won the hammer throw with a distance of 50.22 meters. In the pole vault, Allyson Thomas (Auburn, Maine) was eighth, clearing 3.15 meters. Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was sixth in the long jump with a distance of 5.28 meters. Kayla Rubin (Sanford, Maine) was fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 34.12 meters.

In addition, Allyson Howatt (Fredericton, New Brunswick) qualified for the finals of the 100 meters with a time of 12.26. Courtney Francis (Waltham, Maine) qualified for the finals of the 100 meter hurdles in 15.26 and the 400 meter hurdles in 1:05.12. The finals those three races will be held on Sunday.

For the men, freshman Jeff Ramos (Turner, Maine) won the high jump by clearing 2.02 meters. Toby Poirer (Lewiston, Maine) was seventh in the javelin throw with a distance of 53.69 meters. In the 10,000 meters, Charles Therriault (Clinton, Mass.) was sixth overall with a time of 32:33.22. Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) was fifth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:18.17.

 

 

In the 110 meter hurdles, Max Ludwig (South Portland, Maine) qualified for the finals with a time of 14.95. Matthew Holman (Gardiner, Maine) qualified for the 400 meter hurdles finals in 56.32. The finals for those events will be held on Sunday.

After the first day and six events for the women, New Hampshire led with 65 points. Boston University (39.5), Vermont (35.5), Albany (30), Binghamton (21), Maine (19), UMBC (13) and Stony Brook (11) rounded out the field. On the men's side of the meet after seven events, Albany had the lead with 81 points. New Hampshire (66), Binghamton (41), Maine (19), UMBC (18), Boston University (17), Vermont (12), Stony Brook (11) and Hartford (8) completed the field.
