![]() Track Competes At America East Championships

DURHAM, N.H. - The University of Maine men's and women's outdoor track teams took part in the America East Championships on Saturday and Sunday hosted by the University of New Hampshire. The men finished sixth and the women seventh overall. The Black Bears had four individual champions, including Clarissa Michalak in the hammer throw, Amanda Virgets in the heptathlon, Jeff Caron in the 5000 meters and Dzigbodi Ababio in the shot put. On Saturday for the women, Clarissa Michalak (Cumberland, Maine) took first place in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.23 meters, which was over two meters farther than the second place competitor. Micralyn Wiechman (Buxton, Maine) added a sixth place finish in the hammer at 40.95 meters. In the javelin throw, Kayla Rubin (Sanford, Maine) was fifth with a throw of 34.67 meters. Rachel McCaslin (Westbrook, Maine) was seventh in the long jump with a distance of 5.44 meters. In the pole vault, Allyson Thomas (Auburn, Maine) tied for fifth by clearing 3.15 meters, Heather Zavaduk (Smithers, British Columbia) was seventh, jumping 3.15 meters, and Shira Panelli (Salinas, Calif.) was eighth, also jumping 3.15 meters. Sunday, Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) completed the heptathlon with 4413 points for first place. Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.93, which qualifies for the ECAC Championships. Also in the 800 meters, Kristen Vidlak (Thunder Bay, Ontario) was sixth in 2:14.01. In the 100 meter hurdles, Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) was seventh in 15.40, and she added a third place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.58 meters. In the 400 meters Lindsay Burlock (Caribou, Maine) was sixth with a time of 59.78. Katelyn Andrle (Clifton, Maine) was fourth in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:05.99. Stephanie McCusker (Lisbon, Maine) was eighth in the triple jump at 11.62 meters and Maegan Burke (Kennebunk, Maine) was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 12.08 meters. Micralyn Wiechman was fourth in the discus with a throw of 35.50 meters. The Black Bears' 4x800 meter relay team was third with a time of 9:20.26.
For the men on the first day of competition, Charles Therriault (Amherst, Mass.) was fifth in the 10,000 meters in 32:33.02, while Joshua Trevino (Rochester, N.H.) was sixth in 32:39.43. In the high jump, Christopher Warren (Woburn, Mass.) was fourth by clearing 1.93 meters and Khabir Edwards (Portland, Maine) tied for eighth, clearing 1.83 meters. On Sunday for the men, Jeff Caron (Auburn, Maine) won the 5000 meters in 14:51.61, just three hundredths of a second over Robbie Freeman of Albany. Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was third in the 5000 meters in 14:55.84. Dzigbodi Ababio (Willingboro, N.J.) won the shot put with a throw of 16.24 meters. In the 400 meters, Khabir Edwards was sixth with a time of 49.39. In the 400 meter hurdles, Matthew Holman (Gardiner, Maine) was fifth in 56.66. Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) completed the decathlon with 5429 points for seventh place. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was seventh in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:59.75. Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) was fifth in the triple jump, going 13.47 meters. The Black Bears' 4x800 relay team was second with a time of 7:44.49. The Albany women won the America East Championship with 180 points. Boston University (166.5), New Hampshire (121.5), UMBC (106), Binghamton (95), Vermont (88), Maine (78.5), Stony Brook (17) and Hartford (5.5) rounded out the scoring. The Albany men also won the Championship with 199.5 points. They were followed by New Hampshire (195.33), Binghamton (129.5), UMBC (101.33), Boston University (95), Maine (66.33), Vermont (35), Stony Brook (18) and Hartford (13). Next week the Black Bears will compete in the New England Championships in Boston on May 12 and 13, and also the IC4A and ECAC Championships on May 13 and 14 at Princeton. In addition, the four conference champions automatically qualify for the NCAA Regionals on May 26 and 27 in Greensboro, N.C.
