Track and Field Teams Perform Well at New England Championships
May 11, 2008 DURHAM, New Hampshire-- The University of Maine track and field teams competed at the New England Championships in Durham, N.H. over the weekend. The men's team finished ninth out of 38 teams while the women's team placed 25th out of 32 teams. On the women's side, Tanya Simard (North Bay, Ontario) led the way for the Black Bears as she took fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump. Other Black Bears with solid performances included Jennifer Pierpont (Saco, Maine) taking eighth in the 100 meter dash and 18th in the 200 meter dash, Vanessa Letourneau (Fairfield, Maine) who came in 12th in the 800 meter run, Lauren LaRoche (Auburn, Maine) placed 20th in the 1,500 meter run, Katie Donnelly (Westbrook, Maine) came in 18th in the triple jump, Maegan Burke (Kennebunk, Maine) finished 16th in the shot put and Rebecca Even (Stoneham, Mass.) took 10th in the hammer throw. On the men's side, the 4x100 meter relay team dropped more than two seconds off its time last week and are the New England champions in the event with a time of 42.02. The time is just shy of the school record of 41.68 set in 1988. The time also qualified the team for the IC4A Championships next weekend. Dan Poirier (Lewiston, Maine) is the New England champion in the javelin with a throw of 200-7, Other solid performances included Dan Voner (Hallowell, Maine) and Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) finishing in third and fourth, respectively in the 800 meter run, Charles Therriault (Amherst, Maine) came in 22nd in the 10,000 meter run, Jeff Ramos (Turner, Maine) came in fifth in the high jump and Mark Liimakka (Old Town, Maine) came in 14th in the pole vault.
