Maine Track Opens Indoor Season Against New Hampshire

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine men's and women's indoor track teams began the season by hosting the University of New Hampshire in a dual meet on Saturday in the Maine Fieldhouse. The women's team earned a 95-85 win, while the men were defeated 102-74.

The women's meet began with the Black Bears taking the top two spots in the 60 yard dash, led by Vicki Tolton (Smithers, B.C.) in 7.41. Tolton added a first place finish in the 200 meter dash, crossing the line in 25.75. In the mile, Heather Jovanelli (Brewer, Maine) was first in 5:15.30. Amanda Virgets (Stevensville, Md.) won the 500 meters with a time of 1:20.66, while Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) won the 800 meters in 2:18.61. Maine also took the top two spots in the 1000 meters as Kristen Vidlak (Thunder Bay, Ontario) was first in 3:04.09. Kathryn Souviney (East Vassalboro, Maine) won the 60 yard hurdles in 8.40 and in the 4x880 yard relay the Black Bears were first. In the field events, Maine picked up first place finishes in the high jump by Erin Hatch (Saco, Maine) and the pole vault by Heather Zavaduk (Smithers, B.C.).

In the men's meet, Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) won the mile run with a time of 4:18.80. In the 800 meters, Scott O'Connor (East Greenville, Pa.) was first with a time of 1:55.14. Maine was first and second in the high jump as Skip Edwards (Portland, Maine) cleared 2.01 meters and Chris Warren (Woburn, Mass.) cleared 1.86 meters. Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine) was first in the pole vault, clearing 4.15 meters and Ben Toothaker (Hampden, Maine) was second in 2.20 meters. Carson Hartman (Fort Kent, Maine) won the triple jump with a distance of 13.27 meters.
