Cross Country Finishes Second At UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's cross country teams both finished second in a three-way meet hosted by UMass on the Amherst College cross country course on Saturday. Black Bears took first place in each race, as Kirby Davis won the men's race with a time of 25:49 and Heather Jovanelli won the women's race in 18:59.

In the men's race, Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was first by 43 seconds on the 8,000 meter course. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was third overall with a time of 26:42, while David Woods (York, Maine) was sixth overall in 27:04. Also scoring points for the Black Bears were Jon McGonagle (Portland, Maine) in 13th place in 27:36 and Charles Therriault (Amherst, Mass.) was 14th in 27:40.

For the women, Jovanelli (Brewer, Maine) won the 5,000 meter race by eight seconds. Finishing second for Maine was Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) in fifth place with a time of 19:25. Teig Choroszy (Saco, Maine) was ninth overall in 20:04. Rounding out the top five scorers for the Black Bears were Lauren LaRoche (Auburn, Maine) in 16th place in 20:41 and Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) in 17th place in 20:55. Also running for Maine was Erin Lawler (Waterville, Maine) in 21:38.

The scores from the men's race were: UMass 27, Maine 35 and Vermont 70. For the women, Vermont had 28 points, Maine 48 points and UMass 49 points.

Next up for the Black Bears will be a dual meet against New Hampshire on September 23 at Maine. Maine will host the Murray Keatinge Invitational on October 1, with teams such as Stanford, Iowa, Dartmouth and Idaho State in the field.
