Black Bear Men First, Women Third At UMass Cross Country Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - The Black Bear men's cross country team placed three runners in the top five to win the UMass Cross Country Invitational on Saturday and the women's team finished third. The Maine men's team finished with 29 points, followed by UMass (32) and Vermont (69). The women's team had 72 points, while UMass finished first with 29 points and Vermont was second with 31 points. Mike Lansing (Lovell, Maine) led the field with a time of 22:55 on the 4.75 mile course to take first place overall. Jeff Caron (Auburn, Maine) finished fourth in a time of 23:15, followed by Kirby Davis at 23:15 in fifth place. Andy Caron (Topsham, Maine) finished seventh overall with a time of 23:27. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine), Josh Trevino (Rochester, N.H.) and Jon McGonagle (Portland, Maine) rounded out the top seven point scorers for the Black Bears. In the women's race, Kristen Vidlak (Thunder Bay, Ontario) was the top Black Bear finisher with a time of 18:45 on the three mile course to take ninth place overall. Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) also had a top ten finish with a time of 18:53. Miranda Szwec (Bangor, Maine) had a time of 19:35 to finish seventeenth overall. The other point scorers for Maine were Erin Lawler (Waterville, Maine), Teig Choroszy (Saco, Maine), Charlotte Howley (Wilton, Maine) and Jessica Hudec (Chicago, Ill.). Next the Black Bears will host the 13th Annual Murray Keatinge Invitational on October 2. The men will start at 11:00 am, with the women starting at 12:00 pm.
