Cross Country Takes Second At UMass

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Maine men's and women's cross country teams both finished second in a meet on Saturday against Massachusetts and Boston College. The Black Bear men were second to Massachusetts, while the women were second to Boston College in the race held on the Massachusetts cross country course. Kirby Davis and Jessica Belliveau were the top finishers for the Black Bears.

In the men's eight kilometer race, Kirby Davis (Falmouth, Maine) was second overall in 25:13, just two seconds behind the first place finisher, Jesse Regnier of Massachusetts. Donald Drake (Portland, Maine) was third overall in 25:25, while freshman Miles Bartlett (Casco, Maine) was sixth overall in 25:45. David Englehutt (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) and Jon McGonagle (Portland, Maine) rounded out the top five scorers in 26:13 and 26:49, respectively.

For the women's race, freshman Jessica Belliveau (Quispamsis, New Brunswick) was fourth overall with a time of 18:38 on the five kilometer course. Fellow freshman Elonnai Hickok (Rutledge, Pa.) was fifth overall in 18:58 and junior Hana Pelletier (Belgrade, Maine) was sixth overall in 18:59. Freshman Jolene Belanger (Gelnburn, Maine) and Shelby Howe (Columbia, Maine) finished in 19:17 and 19:52, respectively to round out the top five scorers for the Black Bears.

The Black Bears next home meet will be the Murray Keatinge Invitational on September 30. Teams scheduled to compete include Texas Tech, Boston College, Dartmouth, Vermont, and New Hampshire among others. The men's race begins at 10:00 am and the women start at 11:00 am, with both races beginning on the practice fields and finishing on the Alfond Stadium track.
