Cross Country Names Ryan Harkleroad Volunteer Assistant Coach

ORONO, Maine--University of Maine head cross country and track and field coach Mark Lech announced today that former Maine cross country and track and field runner Ryan Harkleroad has joined the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. "I'm excited to have Ryan back with us now as a member of the coaching staff," said Lech. "He was a great competitor here as an athlete and has a good coaching mind on his shoulders He's going to do a great job." Harkleroad won the 2001 America East Championship in the 800 meters, was runner up in the 800 at the New England Championships, and was also a member of the 2001 and 2003 America East champion 4x800 meter relay teams. He also competed at the IC4A Championships in the 800 and 4x800 meter relay. He graduated from Maine in 2003 with a degree in political science. During his tenure at Maine, he was a four-time recipient of the Scholar-Athlete Award as well as a finalist for the 2003 Student-Athlete of the Year Award. In addition to working with the men's and women's cross country teams, he will be working with track and field athletes in the distance events.
