Aliya Cox is the newest addition to the University of Maine women's basketball staff, as she was named an assistant coach on Sept. 14, 2006.
Cox joins the Black Bear staff after spending the previous six seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, UMass-Lowell.
She served as the first assistant coach on the Riverhawks staff from 2004-06. She performed several duties, including recruiting coordinator, scouting opponents, working with the guards and post players, directing strength and conditioning camp, co-directing summer basketball camps, scheduling, and implementing community service programs. Prior to being named the first assistant, Cox was the second assistant for the program from 2000-04. She also spent one year at Fitcorp-Corporate Fitness Center working as an exercise physiologist.
A native of Middletown, Conn., Cox is a 2000 graduate of UMass-Lowell with a bachelor's degree in health education with a concentration in psychology. She lettered in basketball for the Riverhawks, while being named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference team in 2000.
She helped lead the Riverhawks to three Northeast-10 championships and three trips to the NCAA regionals. Cox also captained the 1999-00 squad. After her collegiate playing career ended, Cox spent a couple of years playing professionally in Europe.
