Box Score

ORONO, Maine - Ashley Underwood scored a game-high tying 17 points to lift Maine to a 64-47 win over New Hampshire in the America East opener for both teams on Thursday night at Alfond Arena.

It marked the second-straight game that Underwood scored a game-high point total. The Black Bears won their second straight to improve to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in America East. The Wildcats dipped to 5-7 and 0-1 in the conference.

Katie Whittier notched her second-straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. It marked her third double-double of the season and her fourth double-figure rebounding game of the campaign.

Senior forward Bracey Barker returned from a five-game layoff due to a wrist injury and chipped in 11 points off the bench, while pulling down four rebounds. Classmate Lindsey Hugstad-Vaa netted 10 points to round out the double-figure scorers for Maine.

Danielle Clark paced UNH with a team-high 17 points. For their efforts Whittier and Clark were named the America East players of the game.

Underwood and Whittier each chipped in 10 points in the first 20 minutes to give Maine a 35-20 advantage at the intermission. It was the largest lead the Black Bears lugged into the lockerroom at the break all season.

The Wildcats cut into the lead and got within 41-33 at the 10:19 mark of the second half on a Ray Williams layup. However, Maine rallied with a 9-2 run to go up by 15 at 50-35 with 7:37 to go in the game. The run was sparked by an Underwood layup and capped with a Hugstad-Vaa jumper. UNH never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

The win for Maine was its ninth-straight over New Hampshire at home. It was also the second time in the last three seasons the Black Bears opened the conference schedule with a win.
