Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a tough 72-65 decision to Stony Brook on Wednesday night at the Stony Brook University Arena in Stony Brook, N.Y. The Black Bears fell to 4-12 overall and 1-2 in America East, while the Seawolves improved to 6-10 and 1-2 in the league.

Sophomore guard Amanda Tewksbury led the way for Maine with a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds, while Brittany Boser added 11 points.

Aly Young paced Stony Brook with 23 points, while Dana Ferraro chipped in with 17 points.

Stony Brook scored the opening eight points of the game and eventually built its lead up to 15 at 20-5 with 12:51 remaining in the first half. The Black Bears made a brief rally (12-5) to get within eight at 25-17 with 6:56 to go as Tewksbury capped the run by converting a pair of free throws.

However, Stony Brook pushed its lead back out to 13 two minutes later at 32-19 on a pair of Kirsten Jeter free throws. Again, Maine responded and outscored the Seawolves 12-2 the rest of the half to pull within 34-31 at halftime. The surge was aided by six points from Tewksbury, which included a running baseline jumper to beat the first half buzzer. She led all Black Bear scorers in the first half with 11 points.

A basket each from Boser and Tewksbury staked Maine to a 35-34 lead two and a half minutes into the second half. However, Stony Brook quickly surged back in front with back-to-back baskets from Jeter and Crystal Rushin to grab a slim 38-35 edge.

Stony Brook would not relinquish its lead the rest of the night in earning the win as its advantage hovered approximately between 3-7 points the rest of the way.

Maine returns to action Saturday night at Alfond Arena when it plays host to Hartford at 7 p.m. Tickets still remain and can be purchased by calling 581-BEAR or toll-free at (800) 756-TEAM.
