Jan. 27, 2007

Box Score

ORONO, Maine - Bracey Barker paced Maine with 12 points and seven rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Black Bears fell to Hartford on Saturday by a score of 66-50 at Alfond Arena in Orono. The Hawks improved to 13-7 overall and 6-1 in America East. The Black Bears dipped to 10-9 and 4-4 in league play.

Kris Younan added nine points, while Sandra Vaitkute came off the bench to chip in seven. Younan also tallied five assists to go along with her point total.

Ikea Witt totaled a game-high 21 points for Hartford, while Lisa Etienne recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Danielle Hood netted 16 points, four rebounds and three steals as well.

Barker and Witt were named the America East Players of the Game for their efforts.

The Hawks raced out to a 17-4 lead midway through the first half as they never trailed the entire contest. Maine fought back and got within five at 28-23 with 1:51 to go until halftime on a Younan layup.

Hartford held a 30-23 lead at halftime, but Maine used a three-pointer from Barker in the opening moments of the second half to pull within four at 30-26. The Black Bears got within three at 32-29 with 18:24 to go in the game on a three-point play from Barker. However, that was as close as Maine would come to overtaking Hartford. The Hawks immediately responded with a 9-0 run to go up 12 at 41-29 and only let the lead slip below double-digits once more as it sealed the win.

Maine has a mid-week bye before returning to the court next Saturday for a 12 p.m., tip at New Hampshire. The Black Bears defeated the Wildcats 64-47 in the conference opener for both teams back on Jan. 4, in Alfond Arena. The game can be heard on the radio throughout the Bangor area on WZON-AM 620 or world-wide on the internet at www.zoneradio.com(.)
