Women's Basketball Drops Tough Loss at Binghamton
Feb. 23, 2008 VESTAL, N.Y. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 64-57 decision to Binghamton on Saturday afternoon at the Events Center in Vestal, N.Y. The Black Bears dipped to 7-19 overall and 4-9 in America East, while the Bearcats improved to 9-16 and 7-5 in the league. Colleen Kilmurray paced Maine with 16 points, while Kris Younan added 13. Christina Mosher added eight points and eight rebounds for the Black Bears. Maine out-rebounded Binghamton, 34-30, as the Black Bears still have yet to be out-rebounded by an America East opponent this season. Laine Kurpniece tossed in a game-high 21 points for the Bearcats, while Laura Sario chipped in with 12. Juta Jahilo and Erica Carter netted 10 points apiece. The first half got off to a slow start for both teams. However, Maine found its offensive stroke and grabbed a 16-10 lead late in the first half. Amanda Tewksbury aided the rally with four points, and a layup by Brittany Boser put the Black Bears up by the six-point margin. The Black Bears held a 24-14 advantage on the boards in the first half, which helped them build a 20-18 lead at halftime. Tewksbury led all Black Bear scorers in the first 20 minutes with six points. Mosher pulled down six rebounds in the opening frame.
The Black Bears opened the second half with a 12-4 run to take a 32-22 advantage at the 15:20 mark. Kilmurray sparked the surge with back-to-back three-pointers. The Bearcats fought back and pulled within five at 37-32 with 12:31 to go on a three-pointer by Carter. Maine used a three-pointer by Younan a few minutes later to stake the Black Bears to a 46-40 edge. However, Binghamton scored the next 17 points to grab a 57-46 advantage. The Bearcats outscored Maine, 24-11, over the final 6:37 of the contest to pull out the win.
