Women's Basketball Falls to Vermont

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 74-52 decision to Vermont on Wednesday night at Alfond Arena in Orono. The Black Bears fell to 7-20 overall and 4-10 in America East, while the Catamounts improved to 20-7 and 11-3 in the league. Maine was led in scoring by Amanda Tewksbury's 13 points. It marked the 10th time in 14 conference games this season that Tewksbury has scored in double-figures. She also pulled down seven rebounds in the contest. Colleen Kilmurray chipped in 11 points for her fourth-straight double-digit scoring performance. Courtnay Pilypaitis paced Vermont with a game-high 21 points, while Amy Rosenkrantz and May Kotsopoulos added 15 and 14 points, respectively. Sy Janousek came off the bench to contribute 11 points for the Catamounts. Vermont shot a strong 58 percent (29-of-50) from the floor. Vermont raced out to an 8-0 lead 90 seconds into the contest. Following a timeout, Maine cut the deficit in half on layups by Christina Mosher and Tewksbury. However, the Catamounts pushed their lead back out to eight at 12-4 two minutes later on jumpers by Rosenkrantz and Kelli Poles. Vermont was able to get 22 points in the paint in the opening 20 minutes to build a 42-26 lead at halftime. The Catamounts led by double-digits the entire second half in earning the win. Maine was a solid 89 percent (16-of-18) from the free throw line in the contest, including a 6-of-6 effort from Kilmurray. Tewksbury shot 71 percent (5-of-7) from the field in the game. Kris Younan and Mosher led Maine with a team-high three assists apiece. The Black Bears out-rebounded Vermont 35-20 in the game. Maine has yet to be out-rebounded by a conference opponent this season.
