Women's Basketball Falls at Hartford
March 1, 2008 WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The University of Maine women's basketball team dropped a 67-45 decision to Hartford on Saturday afternoon at Chase Arena in West Hartford, Conn. The Black Bears fell to 7-21 on the season and 4-11 in America East, while the Hawks ran their record to 22-5 and 12-2 in the league. A pair of Black Bears set or tied their career-highs in points on the afternoon. Christina Mosher tied her career-high with 10 points, while Katia Bratishko set a new mark with six. Amanda Tewksbury paced all Maine scorers with 11 points, which marked the second-straight game she led the team in scoring. Lisa Etienne tossed in a game-high 17 points for Hartford, while Danielle Hood and Diana Delva scored 10 each. Hartford jumped out to a 16-5 lead at the 13:09 mark of the first half. However, Maine hung tough and outscored the Hawks, 8-6, over the next five minutes to pull within nine at 22-13. The run was sparked by four points from Bratishko, and two points apiece from Tewksbury and Mosher. The Hawks answered Maine's surge with four-straight points to rebuild a double-digit lead and eventually take a 36-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. Bratishko and Mosher each led Maine with six points in the opening 20 minutes, while Tewksbury chipped in five. Both teams got off to a slow start offensively in the second half. The Black Bears and Hawks did a good job on the boards defensively, thus preventing either side from getting early second-chance opportunities. Following the under 16:00 media timeout, Hartford outscored the Black Bears, 10-2, over the ensuing two minutes to open up a 48-26 lead. Harford led by double-digits the rest of the way in earning the win.
Maine returns to action Wednesday night when the Black Bears close out the regular season by playing host to New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m., at Alfond Arena. The game marks Senior Night as guard Kris Younan will be honored prior to the game. Tickets still remain for the contest and can be purchased by calling 581-BEAR or toll-free (800) 756-TEAM.
